Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Who is eligible?

All participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age and be eligible to work in Ontario. Participants under 18 years of age must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent as required under the Education Act.

Newcomers, including temporary residents, asylum seekers and refugees should confirm with the federal government if a study permit is needed to participate in Year 1 Ready Stream programs. Newcomer participants in receipt of an Authorization for Emergency Travel document and valid work-permit are eligible to participate in the PreApprenticeship Training Program as long as the training duration (i.e., all training activities including work placement) does not exceed six months in length. 

Participants with an active Employment Insurance claim may be eligible for a Section 25 referral under the Employment Insurance Act, 1996 (Canada). 

What will you learn?

The Pre- Apprenticeship program will be broken down as follows:

  • Week 1: Participants will learn foundational skills; how to use a tape measure,  trade math, workplace safety, communication and conflict resolution through our partners at the LearningHub. https://www.learninghub.ca/
  • Week 2: Participants will receive Health and Safety training including essential certifications  such as Working at Heights, WHMIS 2015 and Ontario Health and Safety in 4 Steps. We will also cover non-essential certifications like Confined Space Awareness, Forklift Operator, Power Elevated Work Platform Operator and First/ Aid CPR.
  • Week 3: Participants will have the opportunity to explore the trade of Interior Systems Mechanics with our neighbour's Local 2041. During this week, pre-apprentices will work with tools and complete projects with steel stud framing, drywall and drop ceilings.
  • Weeks 4- 11: Participants will complete Level 1 of the 403A- General Carpenter Apprenticeship Program. This is the same training that registered apprentices receive and will exempt individuals from having to take the program once becoming an apprentice. In this program we will cover trade history, math, geometry, plan reading, scaffolding, welding, hand and power tools. Participants will also have the opportunity to complete hands-on projects in our shop.
  • Weeks 12-19: Participants that pass the program and have interest will be awarded an 8-week paid work placement with one of the Carpenters Union Local 93 signatory contractors. Here participants will learn the expectations along with the ebb's and flows of a typical workday.

Is there a cost to participate?

No, the program is 100% free! We will even provide you with your own tools and personal protective equipment, there are also supports if you have a dependent in care or are travelling to participate in the course.

When will the program start?

We have two course offerings, one will begin June 19th, 2023 and the other November 13th, 2023. Each program is 11 weeks in class and 8 weeks on a construction site.

Where is the program taking place?

All of the training will take place at our state-of-the-art facility in Kanata, Ontario
